Hand drawn maps (Sri Lanka)

At the recent Small things, mostly” in Saigon, Huynh shared a story from her travels in Sri Lanka.. An elderly Sri Lankan gent she met on the flight to Colombo drew maps for some destinations complete with bus routes and things to see on the way. Huynh found the hand drawn map less distracting compared to google map. She also enjoyed not having to look up her phone frequently. Huynh still keeps the paper map with her as a memento of her travels.

As someone who travels mostly for people and their stories, Sri Lanka is one of my favorite destinations. It is easy to talk to people and the locals always direct you to something interesting in their area. Like India next door, the directions are always related to the place - Go to the alley behind the hospital, or the third shop from the flower shop outside the temple etc. And Sri Lanka has one of my favorite drinks - the ginger beer. There are two brands - Elephant and Lion. Both are strong and spicy.
