Last evening, I was showing a xe om (motorbike taxi) man how to switch languages on his iPhone and note that he has another phone in his lap. Many still argue that such technology does not help people who are not so well off. He enjoys playing games. It helps him relieve stress after a ride through chaotic traffic. At night, he can enjoy a side-loaded movie.
A friend at Public Radio International (PRI) invited me to share my observations of how technology helps people in developing countries improve their lives.
Another example I mentioned is about how free wifi leads to more Korean drama watching, spurring interest in fashion, which in turn helps create jobs for ladies offering street-side beauty services.
The wifi kid in Cambodia could be my best friend but why the droid? “
